Project has being performed since January 2009 by three partner organizations. The main executor of the project is the International Organization of Migration (component "Prevention of Human Trafficking"), the project partners are the Child Well-being Fund Ukraine (a component "Social work") and Western Resource Center (a component "Community Development"). The project is financed with funds provided by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) in the framework of the program of prevention of human trafficking. The project partners are the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and Ministry of Ukraine for Family, Youth and Sports. The project is settled for three years.

Aim of the project is to reduce the negative consequences of human trafficking and uncontrolled migration in some regions of Ukraine by wide involvement of local social workers and teachers, as well as by training and support of public activists in the local work on a basis of community development.

The project was started in four regions: Lviv, Donetsk, Ivano-Frankivsk oblasts of Ukraine and Autonomous Republic of Crimea. In each of the areas of the project selected four population centers (two urban and two rural), on a basis of the work will be performed, which includes training of public activists and social workers, realization of the programs of small projects, a survey of migration and work in the communities aimed at reducing the outflow of labor resources from Ukraine.

The main target group of the project is teenagers and young people facing life choice - to migrate abroad or stay in Ukraine. Objective of the project is to help the communities to create a more supportive environment for young people to be tended to stay in Ukraine, and not go abroad. Due to this the project will work directly with young people and will also involve public activists, village councils, schools, municipal social and medical institutions, with the support of local state authorities, autonomous bodies and NGOs.

On the local level the project intends to work with support of the initiative teams on a basis of communities of villages and groups of activists in the purpose-oriented cities, led by local coordinators to support actions and initiatives of the project.

Component of the project "Community Development" will provide information, consulting and training services for the local communities in villages and district towns selected by the project. Communities that participate in the project will receive opportunity to complete studies on community development, social work and prevention of human trafficking, the program of small grants for partner villages of the project are also foreseen. On the basis of each village - the project partner will work local coordinator, elected from the local residents.

Tasks of the component:

  • Development and implementation in the secondary schools of programs for students “Personal dignity. Life safety. Public position”.
  • Provision of the secondary schools with methodically-informational materials on prevention of human trafficking.
  • Enhancing professional competence of the professionals of the social services on prevention of human trafficking in the community.
  • Creating interdepartmental support network of the preventive work as to human trafficking in secondary schools.
  • Sharing experience of pilot communities on effective prevention of human trafficking.
